Dept of Economic and Community Development

Information Technology Department - Summer 2009

I worked at Department of Economic and Community Development (IT Department) located in Hartford. This was during the Summer of 2009 and during my time there I learned a great deal. I initially expected to work on the the network administration portion but because of shifts in personnel I was assigned to an IT Analyst who was working on a database that encorporated SQL and dealt with Entities and their relationships to clients.

I had to learn very fast because they were just beginning the first phase of their project which was to clean up their system and fix the entities and eliminate duplicates, delete inactives all while maintaining the appropriate relationships between the clients and their projects.
Cleaning up this database involved lots of communication with different department heads within the agency. Initially I would walk all over to ask my questions with my printed reports, but after getting familiar with me they agreed to communicate with me via email and an email account was established for me. It was very time consuming but each new day I learned something new.

I worked with a very knowledgeable IT Analyst whom I'd have to brief every evening on the status of my work and what all I accomplished. She was very happy to see I enjoyed it as no one else volunteered to help with that database as they knew it was tiresome activity.

It was very intriguing and I was very happy to be involved in such a fast paced environment.

These are the things I was responsible for:
*Creation of a document that will be helpful for users as they transition to Microsoft Word 2007 from Word 2003.

*Assisted with the agency's Client/Project Tracking System cleanup effort which entailed learning the basics of the system's flow, application and database.

*Began the cleanup effort of the database's Entities, Recipients and Contacts which flow into the system's Projects. This involved creating reports in MS Access and Excel linked to the SQL database tables.

*Began learning Crystal Reports to assist with the support requests.

In late July I was offered a position where I am currently working and because, initially the internship was not a paid internship I accepted.
