Introduction

Hi, my name is David Scovel. I am currently enrolled in the Computer Information Systems degree progam at Tunxis Community College in Farmington, CT. I have been working with computers in both business and personally since the mid-1980s. Most of my previous experience came from being self-taught and/or by reading books on subjects of that nature.

About Me

I grew  up in the Westfield section of Middletown CT and spent a  lot of my time in the woods around the area. I attended two years of university, but by the time I was twenty-two years of age I headed to the mountains of the west and spent the next six years in a variety of vocations ranging from golf course groundskeeper in Wyoming, construction worker in Colorado and wilderness survival instructor in New Mexico. It is there that I met my wife Linda who was also an instructor.

After marriage we moved to Florida and then New York where I managed a custom lighting manufacturing firm for five years. It was there in Buffalo that I was forced to learn about networking computers with Novell and set up the system for the company at that time. While in the Buffalo area, we had three sons and soon moved back to Connecticut in order to manage an emergency lighting company that first had to be moved from Vermont. Once again, I had to set up the network along with producing all the graphic artwork for the catalogs. It was definitely learn as you go.

In 2000 the emergency lighting company was purchased by a Canadian firm and moved to Toronto. After declining a position with them, I worked as a Database Manager for a non-profit organization as they worked in the area for a year. During the previous years and afterwards I pastored a small Christian church which grew out of a Bible Study in my home. Since 2005 I have been a partner in a service company in the New Haven area.

Some of my hobbies are hiking, being outdoors, sports, working on home projects a nd pl a ying Irish whistles, Indian flutes, percussion and harmonica. I have also traveled extensively having lived in nine states and been in every one except Hawaii. I have also done missions work in such places as Romania, Israel, Kenya, and Haiti, were we have built childrens homes (orphanages) and schools for those less fortunate. All of this leads to a very full life of which I am grateful.

In Fall of 2008 my wife came to me and thought that I should return to school to get a degree in some aspect of computers since I had been building them for myself and others for years. I originally enrolled in a Technician program at Middlesex Community College but after some thought transferred over to Tunxis since the courses were more according to my interests and liking.

Going back to school was originally very taxing as I had to balance work, home and school. But I have persevered and tried to set an example for two of my boys as they are also in college. As I said I originally started out at Middlesex CC since it is only four miles from my home in Higganum. I looked at Manchester CC since my wife had gone there to receive her respiratory therapy degree, but I settled on Tunxis due to the courses that were being offered. I have enjoyed my time here, very rewarding albeit not easy.

Carpe Diem! Seize the Day while there is time.
